Spatiotemporal Vortex Pulses: Angular Momenta and Spin-Orbit Interaction

نویسندگان

چکیده

Recently, spatiotemporal optical vortex pulses carrying a purely transverse intrinsic orbital angular momentum were generated experimentally [{\it Optica} {\bf 6}, 1547 (2019); {\it Nat. Photon.} 14}, 350 (2020)]. However, an accurate theoretical analysis of such states and their angular-momentum properties remains elusive. Here we provide analysis, including scalar vector Bessel-type solutions as well descrption propagational, polarization, properties. Most importantly, calculate both local densities integral values the spin momenta, predict observable spin-orbit interaction phenomena related to coupling between trasnverse momentum. Our is readily extended other natures (e.g., acoustic).

Relativistic electron vortex beams: angular momentum and spin-orbit interaction.

Motivated by the recent discovery of electron vortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (AM), we construct exact Bessel-beam solutions of the Dirac equation. They describe relativistic and nonparaxial corrections to the scalar electron beams. We describe the spin and orbital AM of the electron with Berry-phase corrections and predict the intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in free space. This ca...

Spin-orbit coupling and the Jahn-Teller effect: vibronic and spin-vibronic angular momenta

The concept of symmetry and its breaking holds a special and important place in the physical sciences. One of the best known examples of such symmetry breaking is the Jahn-Teller effect. In their original paper, Jahn and Teller demonstrated(Jahn & Teller 1937) that a symmetry-dictated electronic degeneracy will always be raised by a non-totally symmetric distortion linear in nuclear coordinates...

Ultrafast manipulation of spin and orbital angular momenta by light pulses

All-optical magnetization switching has been studied extensively in recent years. A typical form of non-thermal magnetization control is the inverse Faraday effect (IFE). It involves rotation of the linear polarization of a probe pulse induced by a circularly polarized pump pulse in a transparent medium. Spin precession accompanied by the IFE has been reported by Kimel et al. in iron compounds ...

Spatiotemporal vortex beams and angular momentum

We present a space-time generalization of the known spatial (monochromatic) wave vortex beams carrying intrinsic orbital angular momentum (OAM) along the propagation direction. Generic spatiotemporal vortex beams are polychromatic and can carry intrinsic OAM at an arbitrary angle to the mean momentum. Applying either (i) a transverse wave-vector shift or (ii) a Lorentz boost to a monochromatic ...

Conservation of the spin and orbital angular momenta in electromagnetism

We review and re-examine the description and separation of the spin and orbital angular momenta (AM) of an electromagnetic field in free space. While the spin and orbital AM of light are not separately meaningful physical quantities in orthodox quantum mechanics or classical field theory, these quantities are routinely measured and used for applications in optics. A meaningful quantum descripti...
